Leaves deltoid-reniform to reniform, frequently with 1 or 2 lateral pinnae (especially on uppermost leaves), shallowly lobed; lamina 7-21 x 9-33 mm, glabrous; apex obtuse; margin coarsely dentate (to crenate); base truncate to cuneate or subcordate; petiole 20-73 mm long, glabrous; auricles present, auriform, often inconspicuous. Capitula heterogamous, radiate, few (2 or 3) or occasionally as many as 8-12 per stem in a lax corymbose panicle; peduncles 35-108 mm long, glabrous, bracteate, bracts 2-4 mm long. Involucre calyculate; phyllaries (11-)13(-14), (5.5-)6-7 mm long, glabrous, green with purplish tips; margins scarious. Ray florets 11-13, 9-14 mm long; limb 5.0-9.5 mm long, 4-veined. Disc florets 35-50(-66); corolla 4.0-5.5(-6.0) mm long. Cypselae obovate, compressed, with distinct median rib when mature, margined (to narrowly-winged), dark brown to black with paler brown margins, (2.2-)2.5-2.8(-3.1) mm long, glabrous. Pappus 4.0-4.5 mm long.
More
Annual or possibly short-lived perennial herb, up to 0.6 m high. Leaves alternate, auriculate; blade of young leaves reniform with pinnae, mature leaves oblong in outline, up to 80 x 30 mm, lyrate-pinnatifid, usually with 2 or 3 pairs of lateral lobes, terminal lobe usually the largest, apex of lobes acute, margins dentate, base cuneate to truncate to subcordate, glabrescent, but lower surface remaining sparsely cobwebby or hairy; upper leaves sometimes sessile and clasping; palmately veined; petiole 1-30 mm long. Heads radiate, few to many in corymbose panicles, pedunculate. Involucral bracts 12-14, uniseriate, 4-5 mm long, with calyculus bracts below involucral bracts, cobwebby when young, glabrescent, but cobwebby among calyculus bracts. Flowers: ray florets ± 8; ray and disc florets bright yellow; Oct.-Feb., May. Fruit with cypsela broadly obovate, compressed, broadly winged, black or dark brown with pale brown wings, glabrous or with few minute hairs and/or sparsely ciliate on wings. Pappus of delicate, barbellate, caducous bristles.
Herbs to c. 0.6 m high, glabrous or cobwebby. Leaves to 8 cm long, with l:w ratio c. 2–3, lyrate-pinnatifid, auriculate, denticulate to dentate. Ligulate florets usually 7 or 8; ligule 3.5–6 mm long, usually 4-veined, yellow. Disc florets 32–40; corolla 3–4 mm long, exceeding involucral bracts by c. 1–2 mm; basal cone c. 0.3 mm diam.; limb c. 3/5 of total length; lobes triangular.
