Characteristics

Climber to 1.2 m., or probably more, with glabrous stems, ridged and minutely papillate in the dried state; older stems to 8 mm. wide, including corky angles; tendrils simple.. Leaves thin, purplish beneath, oblong-ovate, up to 10.5 cm. long, 6.8 cm. wide, acuminate at the apex, shallowly broadly emarginate or cordate or some young leaves subtruncate at the base, shallowly undulate at margin but lateral nerves produced as subulate projections, glabrous; petioles up to 6 cm. long.. Inflorescences leaf-opposed, 3-fid into umbel-like cymes; peduncles 1.5–2 cm. long; secondary peduncles 1.5 cm. long; pedicels 6 mm. long, extending to ± 1 cm. in fruit, covered with minute characteristic hairs.. Buds obtuse.. Calyx shallow, 1.8 mm. wide, entire.. Petals red, oblong, 2.5 mm. long, 1 mm. wide.. Disc-glands yellow.. Fruit globose, but obovoid when young, 8–9 mm. in diameter.. Seed compressed-obovoid with basal projection concave on one side and convex on the other, 8 mm. long, 5.5 mm. wide, 3 mm. thick, with faint traces of 2–3 transverse ridges, otherwise smooth.
