Clasmatocolea fasciculata (Nees) Grolle

Species

Bryophytes > Jungermanniales > Lophocoleaceae > Clasmatocolea

Characteristics

Monoicous?, medium sized, yellowish green. Stem to 6 cm long, 120-250 µ in diameter, the apices of the shoots incurved to the ventral side, cochleate. Branches from the lateral portion of the axil of the amphigastria. Leaves densely imbricate, about circular, directed laterally-dorsally, concave, especially in the margins, entire-retusely dentate, teeth sometimes mammeliform, especially the young shoots have leaves dentate. Marginal cells 18-20 x 20-24 µ, cells in the centre 20-30 x 30-36 µ, basal cells longer, up to20 x 80 µ. Walls thin, trigones large, coloured rosy-orange. Cuticle smooth. Oil bodies rather durable, 1-3 per cell, compound, colourless. Amphigastria broadly oval-almost circular, concave, with two apical teeth, a wide and shallow sinus and small lateral teeth. Towards the female organ the leaves and amphigastria increase in size, the latter becoming almost circular. Bracteole lingulate, apex roundedly truncate. Female bracts somewhat larger than the leaves. Perianth apical in a long or sometimes rather short ventral branch, ovate and somewhat compressed from side to side, deeply 3-lobed, margin shortly dentate. Androecia in ventral branches, frequently with continued growth as sterile branches. Bracts imbricate, obliquelly elliptic, apex rounded, basally with a dentate lobule. Anteridia single.
