Shrub, up to 2 m high; resprouting. Stems many, slender, erect, much branched, densely leafy; young stems densely hairy; older brown, fissured. Leaves sessile or subsessile; densely clustered on short branchlets; (1-)3-foliolate, leaflets linear to very narrowly ovate, when young > 10 mm, mature < 13 mm long, apex acute, blunt or rounded, margins noticeably revolute, with no glandular hairs, midrib swollen, prominent; glabrous. Flowers: axillary, in a cluster; brownish white with red, protruding stamens; Nov.-Mar.
Monoecious or dioecious shrub, 0.5-3.0 m high; stem and branches rigid, erect, densely antrorsely villous when young, outer bark tending to flake off. Leaves trifoliolate (unifoliolate by suppression of the lateral leaflets), usually densely arranged on short-shoots; leaflets linear, 5-10 mm long, margins revolute, midribs prominent. Male flowers: sepals 4; stamens 4. Female flowers: receptacle reddish brown, smooth, shiny, striate; stigma white to pinkish. Flowering time Oct.-May.
