Frutex ad 5 m altus (e GoetzE.). Rami et ramuli in partibus junioribus dense cinereo-ferrugineo-villosi; ramuli abbreviati 2-10 mm longi vaginis foliorum inclusi. Folia 3-foliolata; vagina 1-2 mm longa amplectens extus ± dense villosa, stipulis 1-1.5 mm longis anguste triangularibus ciliatis; foliola inter se similia 3-10 mm longa 0.8-1.5 mm lata lineari-lanceolata basin versus sensim angustata glabra vel raro pilosula supra nitida, marginibus revolutis costam haud obtegentibus. Flores [male] sessiles; bracteolae 2.5-3 mm longae acutae breviter ciliolatae; sepala (3-)4 libera vel ad medium conjuncta 3-4.5 mm longa acuta-subacuta glabra vel extus pilosula; stamina (3-)4-6-8, antheris violaceis 0.8-1.2 mm, filamentis 5-6 mm longis. Flores [female] sessiles; bracteolae 2-3 mm longae acutae amplectentes ciliatae; receptaculum oblongum c. 3 mm longum 1-1.3 mm crassum ferrugineum nitidulum glabrum saepe leviter 8 costatum; stigma et sepala ignota.

Leaves trifoliolate, usually densely arranged on short shoots; leaflets up to 9 x 1 mm., rigid, glabrous, shining, oblanceolate with acute, red-tipped apex but appearing linear as the margins are usually strongly revolute so as almost to conceal the midrib; venation weakly pinnate; stipules triangular, scarious, glabrescent except at margins and apex or (in some Inyanga specimens) sparsely hairy on abaxial surface.
Branches rigid, erect, densely antrorsely villous when young, the outer bark tending to flake off.
Ericoid shrub c. 2(?5) m. high, much-branched, erect, dioecious or monoecious.
Stamens usually (3)4(5) or, in Malawian specimens, (6)8.
