Monoecious or dioecious shrub, 0.6-2.0 m high; stems densely branched, forming closely overlapping brachyblasts; upwardly appressed-hairy. Leaves trifoliolate; leaflets linear, curved, pungent, 5-10 mm long, margins minutely toothed. Flowers solitary in axils of undifferentiated leaves; sepals 4, or very rarely 3, glabrous; bracteoles hairy, margins serrate to shortly ciliate. Male flowers: stamens 4(-6). Female flowers: receptacle yellowish green, shiny, oblique obovate-oblong, with 12-16 conspicuous ribs. Flowering time Sept.-Feb. Fruit an achene, glabrous; ribs rounded to acute.
