Characteristics

Shrub or tree to 7 m tall, often epiphytic, twigs quadrangular, mostly drying terete and sulcate. Leaves broadly obovate, apically rounded, basally cuneate, mostly 15-30 cm long, 9-15 cm wide, thick, rigidly coriaceous, the costa prom-inent to near the tip, flanked basally by two parallel indistinct lines; lateral nerves numerous, straight, ascending, terminating abruptly in a submarginal vein to 2 mm from the margin, drying slightly elevated on both sides; petiole not defined, 2-5 cm long, conspicuously winged by the leaf base, somewhat clasping the stem. Inflorescence terminal, many-flowered, congested, rounded; peduncle short and stout, ca. 2 cm long, 6-10 mm thick often curved; pedicels 3-4 mm long, thick, obscured; bracts 2, rotund, subfoliaceous, 2-4 cm long. Flowers with sepals 3-4, imbricate, the outer pair thicker, larger, rotund, keeled, 6-12 mm long; petals white or pink, sometimes greenish, 6, oblanceolate or broadly elliptic, in stami-nate flowers the stamens numerous, congested, the filaments ca. 1 mm long, the anthers linear, ca. 4 mm long, laterally dehiscent, the connective produced into a minute apiculum; pistillate flowers with 8 staminodes basally connate into an annulus, the ovary crowned with 6-7 thick subsessile stigmas, the locules many-ovulate. Fruit globose or subcylindrical, 3-4 cm long, ca. 2.5 cm wide, the stigmas sessile, ca. 1 mm long forming streaks down the distal end of the capsule.
