Characteristics

A shrub or tree, to 7 m tall, often epiphytic. Leaves broadly ovate to sub-circular, mostly 9-15(-20) cm long, 7-12(-13) cm wide, apically rounded, basally obtuse or rounded, the costa prominent about 2/3 way up, elevated beneath, the lateral veins close, parallel, ascending, nearly straight, arcuate distally terminat-ing in a distinct submarginal vein; thick, rigidly coriaceous; petiole distinct, un-winged, 2-4 mm long. Inflorescences axillary to the terminal leaves, short dicha-sial racemes, to ca. 6 cm long, bracts and bracteoles conspicuous, flaring, cucullate, 2-3 mm long; pedicels 0-3 mm long, stout; bracteoles subtending the flowers 4, decussate. Flowers (buds) with 'sepals 4, decussate, abruptly acute. Fruit ellipsoidal, or ovoid, ca. 1.5 cm long, dehiscing into 4 valves; seeds 2 per locule, 4 mm long.
