Characteristics

Perennial shrub, 0.3-2.5 m high; erect, much branched; twigs spreading, terete or slightly angled. Leaves firmly membranous, opaque, lanceolate-spathulate, oblong-obovate or linear-elliptic, base narrowed from beyond middle, apex obtuse or subacute, margins flat; pubescent or puberulous on both surfaces; distinctly petioled. Male flowers: sepals narrow-oblong, obtuse, pubescent, 3-lobate basal scale; petals round-obovate, thickened claw, base 2-glandular. Female flowers: sepals narrower than male, basal scale 3-lobate; petals narrower than male, eglandular; ovary glabrous; styles free. Flowering time June-Nov. Fruit an ovoid capsule, glabrous, puncticulate and slightly warted. Seeds black and shining.
