Characteristics

Perennial shrub or dwarf shrub, 0.15-0.35 m high; stems simple; rootstock woody; angular. Leaves: lower ones widely ovate, upper ones ovate-lanceolate; shortly petioled, membranous, soon firmly papery, pellucid-punctate and when young warted, base rounded or subcordate, apex acute or rarely obtuse, margins slightly recurved. Male flowers: 2-4-flowered fascicles; pedicels capillary; sepals ovate-oblong, obtuse, warted-punctate, basal scale 3-lobate; petals rhomboid-ovate, eglandular; ovary rudimentary, subcylindric, glabrous. Female flowers solitary; sepals oblong, subacute, warted-punctate, basal scale 3-lobate; petals as in male, eglandular; ovary glabrous; styles free. Fruit a subglobose capsule, warted-punctuate. Seeds black and shining.
