Characteristics

Perennial shrub, 0.4-1.5 m high; much branched; twigs fastigiate, slender, sparingly tawny-pubescent, and soon glabrous. Leaves petioled, firmly papery, pellucid-punctate, but not warted, linear-to oblong-lanceolate, base cuneate, apex acute, margins flat; pubescent on both surfaces when young, soon glabrescent. Male flowers: pedicels capillary; sepals rounded-ovate, pubescent outside, basal scale 3-5-lobed; petals wide-rounded-obovate, eglandular; rudimentary ovary slender, narrow-cylindric, glabrous. Female flowers solitary or in pairs; pedicels firm; sepals larger than in male, ovate, subacute, pubescent outside, basal scale 2-lobed (less often 1-3-lobed); petals obovate-oblong, without basal scale; ovary glabrous; styles free. Flowering time Dec., Jan. Fruit a warted-punctuate capsule. Seeds black and shining.
