Characteristics

Glabrous perennial pyrophytic herb or subshrub with a woody rootstock with several erect, unbranched stems up to 90 cm. which later become woody at the base.. Petiole 1.5–2(–5) mm. long; blade elliptic-lanceolate, elliptic, elliptic-obovate, obovate-spathulate or occasionally broadly ovate, (1–)2–4.5(–5.5) cm. long, (0.5–)1–2.5 cm. broad, acute, obtuse or emarginate at the apex, tapered or cuneate at the base, membranous or later becoming thinly coriaceous, lateral nerves 5–6 pairs, evenly beset with small clearly visible cystoliths.. Stipules 0.. Male fascicles 1–5-flowered; bracts deltate, 0.5 mm. long.. Male flowers: pedicels very slender, up to 1.8 cm. long; sepals ovate-oblong, 2.5 mm. long and 1.5 mm. broad, greenish, each with a dark brown (when dry) 3–5-lobed gland at the base; petals spathulate, 2 mm. long, 1 mm. broad, white, each with 2–5 dark brown (when dry) glands at the base; staminal column 1.5 mm. long; filaments 0.5 mm. long; anthers 0.5 mm. long; pistillode 0.7 mm. long, dark brown when dry.. Female flowers solitary; bracts as in ♂; pedicels slender, 0.5–1 cm. long, extending to 3 cm. in fruit; sepals as in the ♂, but with 1–3 large suborbicular or bilobed dark brown (when dry) glands at the base of each one, and extending to 3.5 mm. in fruit; petals as in the ♂, but with 0–2 small, pale glands at the base of each one; ovary 1 mm. diameter; styles connate at the base, 1 mm. long.. Fruits 4–5 mm. diameter, granular-tuberculate; endocarp 0.75 mm. thick.. Seeds 3 mm. long, 2 mm. broad.
