Characteristics

Perennial dwarf shrub or herb, 0.15-0.50 m high; stems slender, woody rootstock, virgate, simple or sparingly branched, glabrous. Leaves sessile, coriaceous, opaque, oblong-obovate, base rounded, apex obtuse but mucronulate, margins slightly scabrous, flat; glabrous on both surfaces. Male flowers solitary or in pairs; sepals obovate, obtuse, basal scale 3-lobate; petals widely obovate, cuneately unguiculate, base 1-glandular; ovary rudimentary, turbinate, glabrous. Female flowers solitary; sepals elliptic-lanceolate, larger than male, basal scale 3-lobate; petals obovate-oblong, eglandular; ovary glabrous; styles free. Fruit a subglobose capsule. Seeds black and shining.
