Perennial pyrophytic herb or subshrub, with a woody rootstock and several erect, usually unbranched stems up to 120 cm., although commonly 40–80 cm., pubescent at first, soon glabrescent.. Petiole 0.5–5 mm. long; blade suborbicular or broadly ovate in the lower part of the stem, and ovate-lanceolate in the upper part, (1–)2–5 cm. long, (0.5–)1–3.5 cm. broad, obtuse or acute, rounded at the base, firmly membranous, lateral nerves 5–9 pairs, cystoliths barely visible, sparingly pubescent on the midrib beneath at first, soon becoming quite glabrous, glaucous..
