Characteristics

Ovary 2-locular; ovules 5–8 arranged in c. 3 rows on a laterally compressed placenta attached to the middle of the septum, the placental tissue slightly raised between the ovules; pollen presenter exserted, narrowly clavate, subulate at the base, winged above, at first undivided but finally splitting into 2 parts revealing the stigmatic surfaces.

Corolla tube funnel-shaped, strongly narrowed at base, densely pilose inside at the middle; lobes 5, oblong-elliptic, a little shorter than the tube, overlapping to the left in bud.
Anthers linear, sessile, partly included, dorsifixed at the sinuses between the corolla lobes; pollen grains single, 3-colporate with finely reticulate exine.
Calyx tube ellipsoid, equalling the campanulate limb-tube; lobes 5, elliptic, linear-oblong, ovate or usually obtriangular, obovate or spathulate.
Flowers hermaphrodite, 5-merous, solitary, subterminal, 1–3 at the ends of the lateral shoots, pedicellate.
Seeds free, compressed angular-ovoid; testa reticulate, actually made up of narrow elongate cells.
Fruit a small berry, 10-ribbed, with thin pericarp, crowned by the funnel-shaped calyx limb-tube.
Unarmed shrubs or small trees with the leaves and flowers borne on very short lateral shoots.
Leaves small, gradually narrowed into a short petiole; stipules ovate-triangular.
