Characteristics

Small shrub 1.2–3 m. tall, with numerous short branches; very young branches pubescent, older branches covered with ash-grey bark.. Leaves appearing after flowers, narrowly obovate, 0.9–5 cm. long, 0.7–2.8 cm. wide, obtuse to rounded at apex, sometimes apiculate, cuneate at base, glabrous save for the midrib which is puberulous above; marginal nerve apparent; domatia absent; petiole 1–2 mm. long; stipule-limbs triangular, ± 2 mm. long, gradually tapering to an acute or acuminate apex.. Flowers precocious, (5–)6–7-merous, scented, terminal on short lateral spurs, solitary (or ?paired, see note); pedicel ± 1 mm. long, immediately subtended by a pair of young foliage leaves which are in turn subtended by 1–2 pairs of light rusty-brown, narrowly ovate scarious bracts 2–5 mm. long.. Calyx-tube glabrous to puberulous, 1.5 mm. long; limb ± 0.25 mm. long, ± subequallingthe disc, truncate.. Corolla-tube 0.8–1.2 cm. long, 2.5–7.5 mm. wide at throat; lobes oblong to oblong-elliptic, 1.2–2.3 cm. long, 0.3–0.6 cm. wide, acute.. Fruit 8–9 mm. long, 7 mm. wide; stipe extending to 2–3 mm.. Seeds fawnish brown, 7–9 mm. long, 2.5–4 mm. wide; surface with very close, fine reticulations.
