Characteristics

Shrub or tree, 3-6 m tall, glabrous; young branches covered with light rusty-brown or occasionally creamish-coloured bark. Leaves usually restricted to new growth; blades 5.4-13.8 x 2.2-7.8 cm, broadly elliptic, sometimes round or rarely elliptic in shape, obtuse to acute or slightly acuminate at the apex, acute to obtuse at the base, papery, dull or rarely somewhat shiny above, nerves raised on both surfaces, often undulate at margin with a marginal nerve; lateral nerves in 5-6 main pairs; domatia pubescent with cavity partly defined; petioles 3-6 mm long; stipules triangular, 2-3 mm long, acute or more often shortly apiculate. Flowers precocious, 6-8-merous, borne on older stems, usually at nodes from which the leaves have been shed, (1)2-5 per axil, often borne in fascicled inflorescences; peduncle not exceeding 2 mm long; inflorescence stalks compact in flowering stage; cupules usually 2, overlapping when young, with short foliar lobes; scale-like bractlets present, mostly numerous. Calyx tube somewhat ribbed; limb equalling disk, somewhat dentate. Corolla tube 6-10 mm long, 2-3 mm wide at throat; lobes 7-12 x 3-4 mm, ± oblong, rounded. Fruit pale green turning blackish, 0.9-1.9 x 0.6-0.9 cm, ribbed, occasionally beaked, minutely puberulous; stipe lengthening to 3 mm long. Seeds fawn-coloured, 7-10 x 6 mm.
