Slender-stemmed climber or scandent shrub.. Leaves opposite; lamina papyraceous, elliptic or broadly elliptic, up to 7 cm. long, 3.5 cm. wide, apex acuminate and slightly mucronate, base rounded, nerves on both surfaces rather sparsely pubescent to pilose, sparsely pilose on the areoles beneath, densely ciliate on the margin, rather inconspicuously lepidote; lateral nerves 5–6 pairs; petiole up to 1.5 cm. long.. Inflorescences of unbranched axillary spikes up to 7 cm. long.. Flowers yellow.. Lower receptacle glabrous or nearly so; upper receptacle broadly campanulate, ± 1.5 mm. in diameter, 2 mm. long, sparsely and rather inconspicuously lepidote, otherwise glabrous or nearly so.. Sepals scarcely developed.. Petals subcircular, shortly clawed, 1 mm. long and wide, apex ciliate.. Stamen-filaments 5 mm. long; anthers 0.5–0.6 mm. long.. Disk with short free pilose margin.. Fruit (fig. 5/16, p. 16) subcircular in outline, up to 2.5 cm. long, 2.7 cm. wide, greenish yellow; wings sometimes red, ± 10 mm. broad, glutinous, ± glabrous except for scales; apical peg short or absent; stipe up to 7 mm. long.. Scales (fig. 2/16, p. 13) 50–90(–100) μ in diameter, usually 8-celled with additional tangential and/or radial walls.
