Characteristics

Woody climber or shrub ± 2 m. high; branchlets at first tomentose but soon glabrescent.. Leaves subopposite; lamina membranous (at least when young), broadly elliptic, up to 19 cm. long and 12.5 cm. wide (fide Exell—all 3 sheets at Kew are leafless), densely minutely glandular above, tomentose to densely pilose beneath, apex rounded or acuminate or apiculate, base subcordate to cordate; lateral nerves 7–10 pairs; petiole up to 8 mm. long, tomentose.. Inflorescence of lateral spikes 4–7 cm. long, often in the axils of fallen leaves; rhachis tomentose.. Flowers reddish purple or salmon-red, 4-merous.. Lower receptacle 5 mm. long, densely pilose; upper receptacle campanulate or infundibuliform, slightly constricted above the part containing the disk, 12 mm. long, 3–6 mm. in diameter, sericeous-pubescent.. Sepals broadly triangular, 2–2.5 mm. long.. Petals oblong-spathulate or oblong-elliptic, 4–5.5 mm. long, 1–1.7 mm. wide, pubescent outside, glabrous inside.. Stamen-filaments 18–22 mm. long, 2-seriate; anthers red, 1.5 mm. long.. Disk 2–3 mm. in diameter, glabrous except for a pilose margin, which is not free.. Style ± 26 mm. long.. Fruit 4-winged, elliptic in outline, 3.5–5 cm. long, 2.5–3 cm. wide, apex and base truncate velutinous; apical peg up to 1 mm. long; wings up to 10 mm. wide; stipe up to 10 mm. long.
