Semi-scandent shrub ± 3 m. high to liane climbing to at least 16 m.. Yellow-brown bark peeling rapidly to reveal light brown wood; young shoots sparsely to densely yellow-brown pubescent.. Leaves opposite, subopposite or ternate; lamina membranous to coriaceous, oblong-oblanceolate, up to 23.5 cm. long, 5.5 cm. wide, apex acute to apiculate or acuminate, base cordate, margins undulate, glabrous (except for the scales) or pilose on the midrib beneath; scales golden reddish, scattered; lateral nerves 12–16 pairs, subprominent beneath; petiole up to 5 mm. long, yellow-brown pubescent at first, densely lepidote.. Inflorescence axillary, simple or paniculate due to suppression of the leaves, spikes somewhat globose, ± 1.5 cm. in diameter; peduncle up to 1.5 cm. long, yellow-brown pubescent.. Flowers greenish-white to yellow, odour not recorded.. Lower receptacle 3.5 mm. long; upper receptacle infundibuliform, 5–6 mm. long, 2.5–3 mm. wide, densely to lightly pubescent, lepidote.. Sepals deltate-subulate, 1.5 mm. long.. Petals oblanceolate, 2 mm. long, 0.8 mm. wide, ciliate (glabrous according to F.C.B.).. Stamen-filaments 5 mm. long; anthers 0.8 mm. long.. Disk inconspicuous, with no free margin.. Style 7 mm. long, shorter than the stamens.. Fruit (fig. 5/24, p. 16) ovate in outline, ± 3–4 cm. long, 1.5–2 cm. wide, glabrous except for the scales; wings somewhat glossy, usually 4, sometimes 5 or 6, 3–4 mm. wide; apical peg absent; stipe up to 3–5 mm. long.. Scales (fig. 2/24, p. 13) 100–150 μ in diameter, marginal cells not or only slightly scalloped; cells numerous, greatly radially elongated.
