Characteristics

Leaves opposite; lamina up to 10 x 4 cm., chartaceous, obovate-elliptic or oblong-elliptic, papillose on both surfaces otherwise glabrous except for tufts of hairs in the axils of the lateral nerves beneath, shortly acuminate at the apex, cordate at the base; lateral nerves 5–6 pairs; petiole up to 3 mm. long.

Inflorescences of elongated terminal and axillary spikes up to 10 cm. long; rhachis rather sparsely pubescent and ± glabrescent; bracteoles 4 mm. long, linear-elliptic, glabrous, caducous.
Lower receptacle 3 mm. long, puberulous or glabrous; upper receptacle 8 x 3–4·5 mm., cylindric-infundibuliform, glabrescent.
Fruit 1·5 x 1·2 cm., elliptic in outline, glabrous, apical peg absent, wings 5 mm. broad, stipe short (up to 2 mm.).
Scandent shrub up to 3·5 m. high; branchlets purplish-brown, pubescent at first later glabrescent.
Petals 3–4 x 1–1-·5 mm., elliptic, apex acute, base truncate, glabrous.
Sepals caudate-acuminate, equalling or slightly exceeding the sepals.
Stamen-filaments c. 12 mm. long; anthers 1·5 mm. long.
Disk 2–2·5 mm. in diam., margin pilose, not free.
Flowers reddish, subsessile.
Style 15 mm. long.
