Characteristics

A liane or sometimes a scandent shrub; branchlets densely villous, becoming glabrescent.. Leaves opposite or subopposite; lamina elliptic or broadly elliptic to oblong, 5–8 cm. long, 3–4 cm. wide, apex shortly acuminate, base truncate to subcordate, lightly pilose at first, becoming glabrescent except on the nerves; lateral nerves 4–8 pairs; petiole up to 5 mm. long, sometimes persisting and forming a spine.. Inflorescence of terminal and axillary contracted racemes; rhachis densely pubescent; floral leaves resembling small foliage leaves, but whitish and early deciduous.. Flowers crimson, 4-merous.. Lower receptacle 3–5 mm. long, somewhat constricted above and below theovary, densely pilose; upper receptacle campanulate, 5–7 mm. long, densely pubescent.. Sepals triangular, 1 mm. long.. Petals obovate, 2.5–3 mm. long (3.5–4.5 mm. long fide F.C.B.), 1.5 mm. wide, densely fuscous pubescent externally.. Stamen-filaments 12 mm. long; anthers 0.5 mm. long.. Disk inconspicuous, pilose, without a free margin.. Fruit (fig. 7/32, p. 51) obtriangular or obovate in outline, 2.2–2.5 cm. long, 2–2.3 cm. wide; wings membranous, lightly puberulous; apical peg minute; stipe 3 mm. long.
