Characteristics

Leaves opposite or subopposite or rarely 3-verticillate; lamina 3·5–13 x 1–6 cm., chartaceous, narrowly elliptic or oblong-elliptic, densely silvery-lepidote on both surfaces with scales often contiguous especially beneath otherwise usually glabrous except for occasional tufts of hairs in the axils of the lateral nerves beneath, sometimes pubescent or sparsely pilose, apex acute to rounded, base usually somewhat cordate, sometimes distinctly so; lateral nerves 8–13 pairs; petiole 3–10 mm. long, lepidote otherwise glabrous or pubescent.

Fruit 2–3·5 x 1–3·5 cm., subcircular or more rarely broadly elliptic in outline, silvery-lepidote (less densely on the wings), apical peg up to 1 mm. long or absent, wings up to 12 mm. broad, rigid, coriaceous, stipe slender and elongating to 12(15) mm. long.
Inflorescences of rather dense often subcapitate axillary spikes up to 2·5 cm. long, occasionally branched; rhachis densely lepidote otherwise glabrous or puberulous; bracts very small (c. 0·6 mm. long), caducous.

Petals 1·5–3 x 0·9–1·1 mm., narrowly obovate to spathulate, glabrous, apex rounded or obtuse, shortly unguiculate.
Cotyledons 2, 2–2·5 x 3–3·5 cm., transversely elliptic or subcircular to subreniform; petioles 1–3 mm. long.
Flowers sessile, greenish-yellow, densely lepidote otherwise glabrous or rarely puberulous.
Stamen-filaments 3·5–4·5 mm. long; anthers c. 0·5 mm. long.
Disk 0·8–1 mm. in diam., glabrous, rather inconspicuous.
Sepals very shallowly triangular or merely small teeth.
