Species

Angiosperms > Myrtales > Combretaceae > Combretum

Characteristics

Shrub, sometimes scandent, up to 10 m. high; branchlets greyish or reddish, pubescent when young but soon glabrescent.. Leaves opposite or subopposite, sometimes on short shoots in the axils of old leaves; lamina subcoriaceous, oblong-elliptic to obovate, up to 8.5 cm. long and 4 cm. wide, apex rounded or acuminate, base rounded to subcordate, almost glabrous when mature; lateral nerves 6–7 pairs; petiole up to 5 mm. long, often forming a blunt spinal process.. Inflorescence of terminal and lateral spikes up to 10 cm. long; rhachis with dense macroscopic glandular hairs.. Flowers white, pink or yellowish red, generally appearing before the new leaves.. Lower receptacle glandular, ± 5 mm. long; upper receptacle with broadly infundibuliform upper part, lower part surrounding the disk subglobose, slightly constricted between the 2 parts, (4–)6–10 mm. long, 3–4.5 mm. in diameter, with dense macroscopic glandular hairs present but otherwise nearly glabrous.. Sepals triangular, 2.5 mm. long.. Petals 7–9 mm. long, 2–2.5 mm. wide.. Stamen-filaments 18–19 mm. long; anthers 1.8 mm. long.. Disk glabrous except for pilose margin, which is not free.. Fruit (fig. 7/41, p. 51) 5-winged, elliptic or ovate-elliptic or broadly elliptic in outline, 3 cm. long, 2.5 cm. wide, glabrous, somewhat glutinous; apical peg ± 0.5 mm. long; wings up to 10 mm. wide; stipe 2–3 mm. long.
