Leaves opposite or subopposite; lamina up to 20 x 8·5 cm., chartaceous, oblong-elliptic, minutely glandular but otherwise glabrous, apex acuminate, base rounded to cordate; lateral nerves 9–11 pairs, prominent below; petiole up to 10 mm. long, glabrous, basal part forming a curved spine.
Lower receptacle up to 5 mm. long, glandular but otherwise glabrous; upper receptacle 10–15 x 5–6 mm. with a lower subglobose part (surrounding the disk) and an upper infundibuliform part, slightly constricted between the two parts, sparingly glandular otherwise glabrous.
Fruit 5-winged, up to 3·5 x 3 cm., broadly elliptic to subcircular in outline, glabrous, shiny, apical peg very short, wings up to 10 mm. broad, papyraceous, stipe up to 8 mm. long.
Inflorescences of axillary spikes (often in the axils of fallen leaves) up to 14 cm. long; rhachis glabrous; bracts c. 4 x 1–1·5 mm., caducous.
Petals up to 6 x 2–2·8 mm., narrowly ovate-elliptic, shortly unguiculate, pubescent outside.
Woody climber (or small tree?); branchlets pale, glabrous.
Stamen-filaments 17–18 mm. long; anthers 2 mm. long.
Disk 2–2·5 mm. in diam., margin pilose not free.
Sepals 2–2·5 x 2–2·5 mm., deltate.
Flowers crimson or purplish-red.
Style 27–28 mm. long.
