Characteristics

Scrambling shrub or climber; young branches rufous villous.. Leaves opposite; lamina obovate, up to 16 cm. long and 8 cm. wide, apex abruptlyacuminate, base rounded to subcordate, lightly pubescent beneath, becoming glabrescent, pellucid-punctate; lateral nerves 7–11 pairs, prominent; petiole 4–8 mm. long, pubescent.. Inflorescence of crowded axillary panicles up to 9 cm. long on peduncles 2–4 cm. long; rhachis rufous pubescent.. Flowers (fig. 3/28, p. 14) white.. Lower receptacle 2–3 mm. long; upper receptacle cupuliform, 1.5 mm. long, 2 mm. in diameter, rufous tomentose.. Sepals shallowly deltate.. Petals transversely elliptical to obtriangular, 2–3 mm. long and wide, margins minutely ciliate.. Stamen-filaments 4 mm. long, 2-seriate; anthers 0.5 mm. long.. Disk glabrous with narrow free margin.. Fruit (fig. 5/28, p. 16, not yet known from East Africa) suborbicular to broadly obovate in outline, 1–1.8 cm. long, apex emarginate; wings papyraceous, straw-coloured, sometimes tinged with purple, minutely pubescent; apical peg short; stipe 1–2 mm. long.
