Characteristics

Woody climber; branchlets fulvous tomentose.. Leaves opposite or subopposite, sometimes 3-verticillate; lamina papyraceous, elliptic to obovate-elliptic, up to 16(–20) cm. long and 8(–11.5) cm. wide, apex acuminate, base subcordate, almost glabrous above except for the lightly pubescent midrib and lateral nerves, densely fulvous pubescent to fulvous tomentose to almost glabrous beneath except for the nerves; lateral nerves 7–16 pairs; petiole up to 1.5 cm. long, the lower portion of which may form a spine.. Inflorescence of subcapitate spikes or racemes 3–6 cm. long including the peduncle; rhachis fulvous pubescent.. Flowers sessile or sometimes very shortly pedicellate, cream to pink, maroon or crimson, fragrant.. Lower receptacle 4.5–5.5 mm. long, constricted above the ovary, sericeous; upper receptacle campanulate, 2–3 mm. long, 3–3.5 mm. in diameter, appressed pubescent.. Sepals triangular, up to 1 mm. long.. Petals ovate to subobovate, 1.5–2.5 mm. long, 0.9–1.1 mm. wide, hairy externally, especially on the margins..
