Characteristics

A liane or sometimes a scandent shrub; branchlets lightly villous at first, becoming glabrescent.. Leaves opposite or subopposite, sometimes ternate; lamina oblong-ovate to ovate, up to 16 cm. long and 6 cm. wide, apex shortly acuminate, base rounded or subcordate, lightly pilose at first, becoming glabrescent; lateral nerves 6–10 pairs; midrib prominent beneath; petiole up to 5 mm. long.. Inflorescence of terminal and axillary contracted racemes; rhachis rufous pubescent; floral leaves up to 6 cm. long and 2–5 cm. wide, similar to foliage leaves but whitish or pink.. Flowers (fig. 6/31, p. 50) crimson, 4-merous.. Lower receptacle 3–4.5 mm. long, somewhat constricted above and below the ovary, usually lightly pilose; upper receptacle campanu-late, 5–6 mm. long, 3 mm. wide, glabrous or nearly so.. Sepals shortly triangular, acuminate, 0.5 mm. long.. Petals oblong-elliptic, 2–3 mm. long, 0.1–2 mm. wide, densely fuscous pubescent externally.. Stamen-filaments 12 mm. long; anthers 0.5 mm. long.. Disk inconspicuous, pilose, without a free margin.. Fruit (fig. 7/31, p. 51) obtriangular to obovate in outline, 1.8–2.5 cm. long, 1.7–2.5 cm. wide; wings membranous, glabrous; apical peg absent or minute; stipe 3 mm. long.
