Characteristics

A scandent shrub or liane; stem lightly rufous pubescent.. Leaves opposite or sometimes 3-verticillate; lamina ovate-elliptic to elliptic-obovate, up to 21 cm. long and 11 cm. wide, apex acuminate, base cordate, glabrous when mature except for pilose domatia in the nerve-axils and sparsely hispid midrib and nerves beneath; lateral nerves 6–10 pairs; petiole up to 1 cm. long, stout and leaving a prominent leaf-scar.. Inflorescence of elongated false racemes formed by the suppression of the leaves, 10(–17) cm. long; flowers pink or crimson, on very short ultimate branches of the false raceme, rather crowded in the upper part; peduncle and flowers without or with a very few long gland-tipped hairs, but short gland-tipped hairs sometimes present.. Lower receptacle 5–7 mm. long, lightly pubescent; upper receptacle infundibuliform, 4–6(–9) mm. long, 3(–5) mm. in diameter, lightly pubescent.. Sepals triangular-subulate, ± 1 mm. long.. Petals oblong-elliptic, 6–8(–13) mm. long, (l–)2(–3) mm. wide, glabrous.. Stamen-filaments 14–17(–22) mm. long; anthers 0.6 mm. long.. Disk-margin not free, pilose.. Fruit (fig. 7/36, p. 51) 5-winged, elliptic to broadly circular-elliptic in outline, 2–2–3 cm. long and wide, lightly pubescent; apical peg very short; stipe up to 10 mm. long.
