Characteristics

Leaves opposite; lamina 3·5–16 x 2–6·5 cm., chartaceous to subcoriaceous, elliptic to elliptic-oblong, minutely verrucose and usually shiny and glabrous above, minutely silvery-lepidote otherwise glabrous beneath, apex usually acuminate, base cuneate or obtuse to rounded; lateral nerves 6–10 pairs, usually slightly impressed above; petiole up to 9(13) mm. long, glabrescent.

Fruit up to 2·8 x 2·3 cm., broadly elliptic in outline, minutely lepidote otherwise usually glabrous, wings 7 mm. broad, chartaceous, apical peg 1–2 mm. long, stipe up to 5 mm. long.
Inflorescence up to 20 cm. long, a terminal or axillary panicle of spikes; rhachis densely fuscous-pubescent when young, ± glabrescent; bracts 1–2 mm. long, linear, caducous.
Lower receptacle c. 1 mm. long, glabrous or pubescent; upper receptacle 1·2–1·5 x 1·2–1·5 mm., often petaloid, usually not conspicuously lepidote.
Small tree or shrub, sometimes scandent; branchlets densely pubescent when young, soon glabrescent, often silvery-lepidote when young.
Scales as for the section, frequent in the areoles of the lower surface of the leaf.
Stamen-filaments 3–4 mm. long; anthers 0·5 mm. long; style 4 mm. long, glabrous.
Sepals very shallowly triangular or little developed.
