Characteristics

Unarmed little-branched shrub or small tree up to 4(–5) m. tall; bark yellowish to greyish brown, regularly reticulately ribbed, not peeling; older branches often twisted and gnarled; young branches glabrous or sparsely puberulous, 4–8 mm. in diameter, fluted, sometimes beset with persistent petioles.. Leaves glabrous or sparsely puberulous, (3–)5–9(–11)-foliolate, up to 22 cm. long including a 3–6 cm. petiole and a terminal leaflet up to 5 cm. on a petiolule 2–6 mm. long; leaflets entire, the laterals virtually sessile, rounded or cordate at the base, acute or acuminate apically, up to 8 cm. long and 5.5 cm. wide, the upper surface often with many small blisters when mature.. Male flowers in extraordinary drooping glabrous racemes which may be branched; pedicels under 1 mm. long; calyx glabrous, 3 mm.; petals dark red, 4 mm.; anthers ± 1.2 mm. long.. Female inflorescence erect or spreading, 3–13 cm. long.. Fruiting pedicel up to 3 mm. long; fruit ± 18 × 17 × (7 + 8) mm.; pericarp 2-valved, very fleshy; pseudaril a bright red shallowly lobed cup ± 6 mm. deep; stone white, minutely carunculate, gently curved, ± 11 × 6 × (1+ 3) mm.
