Characteristics

Unarmed tree up to 12 m. tall forking ± 2 m. from the base, crown rounded; trunk angled, never very straight; bark reddish brown, flaking off in rather large, thick, stiff, opaque pieces; slash smooth, pale pink, ± scentless.. Leaves 3–5(–7–9)-foliolate; petiole well developed, more than half as long as the terminal leaflet; rhachis often prolonged beyond the distal leaflet-pair; leaflets elliptic-oblong or broadly oblanceolate, pointed at the base, acute and somewhat acuminate apically, their margins usually entire, discolourous, paler beneath and rather olivaceous above, usually softly appressed pilose at first with hairs on the lower surface up to 0.6 mm. long, glabrescent later, ultimate vein-network forming a fine dark impressed reticulation on the lower surface, principal lateral veins ± 4 on each side, length 20–40(–50) mm., breadth 15–25 mm.; lateral leaflets usually 3/4–4/5 as large as the terminal.. Prophylls (bud-scales) brown or green, pubescent, oblong, caducous, ± 4 mm. long and 1 mm. wide, often rather noticeable.. Flowers yellow, appearing with the young leaves.. Male flowers 8–10 in subumbellate cymes, the peduncle short (2–3 mm.) or long (20–35 mm.), pedicels 2–7 mm.; bracts linear, pale brown, caducous, ± 4 × 0.3 mm.; inflorescence and calyx ± densely covered with soft erect hairs 0.2–0.4 mm. long; calyx ± 2 mm. including the narrowly triangular 1.4 mm. lobes; petals sparsely pubescent outside, narrowly elliptic-linear, ± 4.5 mm. long including the recurved tip, 0.8 mm. wide; filaments 3.5 and 2.7 mm.; anthers 0.7 and 0.4 mm. long.. Female flowers 4–7 in pedunculate cymes; petals ± 2.5 mm. long; ovary sparsely pubescent, ± 2 mm.; style ± 0.7 mm. long.. Fruit-stalk 10–45 mm. long, occasionally 2–3 fruits on a common peduncle; drupe glabrous or sparsely pubescent, asymmetrically ellipsoid, ± 13–14 × 8–11 × (3 + 5) mm.; pericarp 2-valved; pseudaril with 4 linear arms, the sutural ± as long, the sterile facial 4/5 as long and the fertile facial 3/4 as long as the smooth black stone which measures ± 12 × 9 × (3 + 4.5) mm.
