Characteristics

Stoutly spiny trees up to 10(–15) m. tall, the trunk fairly straight, up to 40 cm. in diameter at breast height, irregular, knobbly; slash pinkish grey; exudate milky, sticky; outer bark at first papery, peeling from the green under-bark, later rusty red and flaking, giving the trunk a shaggy appearance; young branches markedly zigzag, at first pubescent.. Leaves olive-green when dry, pubescent, up to 22 cm. long including a 5–25 mm. petiole and a terminal leaflet up to 7 cm. long, 11–21-foliolate, the leaflets largest above the middle of the leaf, rather smaller at the apex and greatly reduced towards the base, the lowest pair sometimes less than 1 cm. long, the largest up to 7 × 2 cm., oblong, obliquely rounded or subcordate at the base, almost sessile, rounded, pointed or rather acuminate apically, with 1–3 principal lateral veins and many small teeth on each side, the whole vein network very prominent beneath, rather less so above.. Flowers in sessile axillary clusters.. Calyx densely pubescent, campanulate, ± 2 mm. long including 1 mm. lobes.. Petals 4.5 mm. long, densely pubescent outside.. Filaments 4 and 2 mm., anthers 1.2 and 1.1 mm. long.. Fruit subsessile, pubescent, subglobose, 20–28 × 18–26 × (4–11 + 7–14) mm. when fresh; pericarp bivalved, very fleshy, 3–6 mm. thick; pseudaril bright red with 2 narrow corrugated sutural arms reaching the top of the stone and 2 broadly triangular facial arms 1/4–1/3 as long; stone lumpy-rugose, ± 13 × 11 × (3 + 4) mm.. Fig. 13/1, 2.
