Characteristics

Biennial herbs, 0.5-1.0 m tall (including inflorescence). Leaves in a basal rosette as well as along the inflorescence, 2-to 4-pinnate, rachis glabrescent to scabridulous, pinnules 5-18 mm x 3-8 mm, elliptic to narrowly elliptic, obtuse or sometimes acute, pinnatipartite; basal leaves senescent at time of flowering; cauline leaves 80-200 mm long, becoming much smaller towards the umbels. Inflorescence 0.5-1.0 m tall; inflorescence axis immaculate, simple below, usually divaricately branched; umbels compound, 30-90 mm wide, fruiting umbels hemispherical in outline, with outer rays horizontal to reclining; involucral bracts lanceolate, acute to acuminate, free or partly fused; rays 4 to 18, 10-30 mm long at anthesis, scabridulous; involucel bracts broadly lanceolate, acuminate, deeply fused; raylets 4 to ± 20, 1-8 mm long at anthesis, slightly scabridulous, apex densely scabridulous. Flowers pentamerous, predominantly hermaphroditic, those in the lateral umbels often entirely or in part functionally male; sepals minute; petals white, obovate to broadly obovate, with inflexed tips; ovaries with prominent white tubercles. Fruit 2.5-3.5 mm x 2.5-3.0 mm, broadly ovate in lateral view; styles reflexed, extending beyond base of stylopodium; mericarps isodiametric, homomorphic; ribs 5, equal, prominent, dorsal surface with fibrous ridges, flexuose, tubercled; white tubercles often scattered between ribs.
