Characteristics

Shrub or small tree to 3 (–4) m high. Young stems glabrous. Leaves opposite, slightly fetid when bruised; lamina elliptic-ovate to narrowly elliptic, 2–6 cm long, 1.3–2.5 cm wide, basally rounded to acute, abruptly attenuate onto petiole, flat, acute or very slightly acuminate with blunt tip, dull green; primary veins 5 (or 6) on each side of midrib, without domatia; petiole 4–10 mm long, glabrous; stipules 3–4 mm long, with stiff, linear point c. 1.5–2.5 mm long. Flowers axillary, c. 8 mm long. Calyx obscure. Corolla 4 mm long, green. Male flowers in clusters of 3; filaments 6 mm long; anthers 3 mm long. Female flowers in clusters of 3 (single or in pairs, fide Hutton 2002: 63); corolla lobes 3 mm long; stigmatic arms 6 mm long. Fruit ellipsoidal, c. 10 mm long, bright reddish orange.
