Shrub or small tree to 4 m high. Young stems glabrous or minutely puberulous. Leaves opposite, strongly fetid when bruised or crushed; lamina broadly elliptic-oblong, sometimes slightly obovate, 4–11 cm long, 2.5–8 cm wide, rounded or narrowly attenuate onto petiole, flat, obtuse to rounded with very short apiculum; primary veins 7–9 on each side of midrib, without domatia; petiole 15–30 mm long, glabrous; stipules 8–12 mm long, with stiff, linear acumen 6–10 mm long. Flowers in leaf axils, c. 8 mm long, green. Calyx obscure. Corolla 6 mm long, greenish white. Male flowers in clusters of 3 or more; filaments 8 mm long; anther 4 mm long. Female flowers solitary or paired; stigmatic arms 10 mm long. Fruit ellipsoidal, c. 1.8–2 cm long, red.
Common in sheltered forests from sea level to mountain tops (Hutton 2002: 73). Widespread in open areas and in open forest, on basalt soil (Department of Environment and Climate Change (NSW) 2007: Appendices p. 138).
