Characteristics

A spreading annual herb to 0.9 m tall; stems glabrous.. Leaves narrowly lanceolate to ovate, 3–11.5 cm long, 0.3–3.3 cm wide, margins serrate, usually with a pair of basal setae 0.3–0.6 mm long, truncate, rounded or cuneate, acute or acuminate, glabrous apart from odd hairs on midrib and veins beneath; petiole 0.7–2 cm long, pilose on upper side; stipules to 1 mm long, glabrous.. Inflorescences of 1–3-flowered fascicles;peduncules and pedicels up to 0.3(–0.8) mm, glabrous; bracts up to 1 mm long, glabrous.. Sepals 5, 4.5–5.3 mm long, 1 mm wide, ciliate at basal margin.. Petals 5, obovate, 4.3–5 mm long, 1–2 mm wide, with ciliate claw at base; stamens ± 20, 3.2 mm long; ovary linear, 2.8–3 mm long, 1 mm wide, setulose.. Capsule solitary or in 2s, cylindric, torulose, straight or slightly curved, 2–3.5 cm long, 0.2–0.3 mm wide, splitting into 3 valves, glabrous.. Seeds angular, up to 1.2 mm long, verrucose, brownish-black.. Fig. 18/11 (fruit, p. 103).
