Slender, much-branched, 1–6 dm, often pubescent esp. when young and in the infl; lvs linear, 1–6 cm × 1–3 mm, often early deciduous; spikes densely fld, 2–8 cm × 4–8 mm; bracts ovate, 4–10 mm, long-acuminate, concealing the frs and the axis of the infl; frs elliptic-obovate, 3–4.5 mm, with a pale, firm wing to 0.5 mm wide; 2n=18. Native of Eurasia, now well established as a weed over much of the U.S., esp. in sandy soil and along lake-shores.
