Characteristics

Leaf cordate to ovate, flat or sometimes cupped, margins sometimes lobed, 15–25 × 12–20 mm, bright green above, silvery green beneath. Flower erect, on an upright ovary (5–7 mm long) and short peduncle (c. 1–2 mm long), 14–17 × 14–20 mm, dorsal sepal dark reddish to reddish purple, labellum reddish purple to purple with translucent areas and darker veins, central part of labellum either white or reddish. Dorsal sepal incurved, 18–25 × 12–15 mm, concave, hooding much of labellum. Lateral sepals c. 5 × 0.4 mm. Petals c. 3.5 × 0.4 mm. Labellum lamina 10–13 × 14–20 mm, almost circular, surface around boss with short red papillae; basal tube 10–11 mm long, base of labellum tube and auricles ranging from just visible to clearly visible below lamina; boss conspicuous, white or cream, sometimes reddish or purplish, flat or slightly domed; margins incurved or spreading, with numerous long, narrow teeth.

Environment

Widely distributed and often locally common in extensive colonies. Frequently found growing under bracken in heath, coastal scrub, heathy forest and moist, sheltered forest; also occurs on sheltered slopes and gullies in drier habitats. Colonises exotic pine plantations in western Vic. and S.A.
