Characteristics

Leaf cordate to round, 15–40 × 15–40 mm, green above with prominent veins, silvery green beneath. Flower erect or reclining, on a recurved ovary, 25–40 × 25–30 mm, translucent to transparent with dark red or reddish purple mottles. Dorsal sepal spathulate, 20–25 × 15–18 mm, concave, curved forwards over labellum. Lateral sepals 5–6 × 0.4 mm. Petals c. 4 × 0.4 mm. Labellum lamina nearly circular, 8–14 × 10–16 mm; basal tube 5–6 mm long, auricles hidden by labellum; boss domed, translucent purplish, with a few short bristle-like papillae; margins incurved or spreading with numerous slender teeth to 3 mm long.

Widespread and common in coastal districts and extending to adjacent ranges. Found growing among shrubs, bracken and litter in heath, heathy forest, coastal scrub, sheoak groves and on sheltered slopes and flats in open forest in freely draining, damp sand.
