Characteristics

Leaf cordate to round, 15–35 × 15–35 mm, dark green or reddish green above, silvery green or reddish beneath. Flower erect or reclining, 20–35 × 18–30 mm, greenish grey to greyish red, marked and spotted with dark reddish purple, central part of labellum creamy white. Dorsal sepal broadly spathulate, 25–35 × 14–18 mm, translucent greyish marked with reddish purple, concave, curved forwards over labellum. Lateral sepals c. 9 × 0.4 mm. Petals c. 5 × 0.4 mm. Labellum lamina obovate, 20–30 × 15–28 mm, reddish purple, surface covered with red or white papillae; basal tube c. 10 mm long, auricles hidden by labellum; boss creamy white, conspicuous, deeply notched, with numerous bristle-like papillae; margins incurved with numerous spreading teeth to 5 mm long.

Widely distributed, disjunct and often locally common on ranges and tablelands; usually occurring away from the coast, but near Mackay it extends close to the coast. Found growing on sheltered slopes and near streams in forested habitats; often also near rocks.
