Roots fleshy-fibrous. Leaves narrowly linear, to c. 25 cm long, caducous; lamina ±involute. Inflorescence to 80 cm long; peduncle erect or decumbent; panicle branches dichotomously divaricate; lowest major branch 5–20 cm from rhizome; racemules 1–7.5 cm long; lower bracts subulate, to c. 6 cm long; uppermost bracts ovate-acuminate or triangular, less than 0.5 mm long, sometimes spine-like. Perianth 3.5-5.5 mm long, white, creamy, pink or purplish. Sepals narrowly elliptic. Petals elliptic, obtuse. Filaments ± kinked; anthers to c. 1 mm long. Capsule nodding, ± fusiform or irregular-shaped, to c. 5 mm long. Seed 1 or occasionally 2 per fruit; caruncle conical distally, the lobes fused. (Henderson 1987: 301). Flowers solitary, upper usually aborting; pedicels to 2 mm long. Fruit 1-or rarely 2-seeded, not attenuated below seed. Seed 1.8–2.2 mm long; testa somewhat wrinkled, dull. (Henderson 1987: 302).
