Leaves opposite, those of a pair with connate bases forming a joint sheath 3–20 mm long around the stem; blade outline elliptic or obovate, 1–8(–12) cm long, 0.5–3 cm wide, the proximal part pseudopetiolate, the distal part pinnatifid, rarely bipinnatifid, with lanceolate segments, these apiculate and glabrous (or pubescent when very young).. Capitula terminal, overtopped by the leaves, 4–5 mm long; capitulum stalk 1–20 mm long, lengthening in fruit to 4 cm, distally sparsely pubescent; phyllaries 10–12, 3–4-seriate, subequal, ovate, 1.8–3.5 mm long, 2–3 mm wide, obtuse, glabrous, green with brown scarious margins; receptacle flat or slightly convex, tuberculate.. Outer florets 1-seriate, on a stalk up to 0.5 mm long, the ovary dorsiventrally flattened and convex beneath, concave above, 1.7–2.2 mm long, 1–1.5 mm wide, 0.2–0.3 mm thick, laterally winged, topped by the 1 mm long bifid style, without any corolla or with partial corolla remnants less than 0.8 mm long; inner florets many (100+), mixed hermaphrodite and sterile, on stalks up to 0.2 mm long, with a corolla tube 0.9–1 mm long, 4 lobes 0.3–0.6 mm long, style ± 1 mm long, anthers ± 0.6 mm.. Achenes ?homomorphic, ovoid, 2–3 mm long including wings 0.2 mm wide, 1.4–2 mm wide, ± 0.3 mm thick, sparsely puberulous (?always).
