Characteristics

Perennial herb, up to 400 mm high; erect or decumbent. Leaves alternate; blade narrowly ovate in outline, up to 30 x 15 mm, bipinnate, lobes linear, apiculate; upper leaves progressively smaller; thinly villous with spreading hairs; lower leaves distinctly petiolate, petiole up to 80 mm long, upper sessile. Heads discoid, large, solitary, pedunculate, upper part of peduncle swollen below head. Involucral bracts ± biseriate, glabrous with broad scarious margins. Receptacle epaleate. Flowers: disc florets only, bisexual; corolla 4-lobed, shortly stalked, bright yellow, reddening with age; Jan.-Apr. Fruit with cypsela ovate, slightly dorsiventrally flattened, narrowly winged. Pappus absent.
