Characteristics

A tufted rhizomatous perennial herb sometimes forming small mats, slightly woody at the base, flowering stems terminal, up to c. 15 cm, simple, ascending-erect, leafy below, becoming sparsely bracteate then nude above, appressed-sericeous below becoming glabrous upwards. Radical and lower stem leaves oblong in outline, up to c. 3 x 2 cm, once or twice pinnate, lobes linear-terete, obtuse, appressed silvery sericeous, sometimes glabrescent, petiole up to 3.5 cm long, base dilated, half-clasping. Upper stem leaves similar but rapidly becoming smaller, once pinnate, then passing into linear bracts. Heads homogamous, solitary, depressed-globose, c. 1-2.5 cm across. Involucral bracts in c. 3 series, glabrous with broad scarious margins. Receptacle with persistent pedicels, outermost 0.5-1 mm long, inner progressively shorter. Flowers bright yellow, reddening with age. Achenes c. 1.5 mm long, slightly compressed, narrowly winged, mucilaginous when wet.
