Species

Angiosperms > Asterales > Asteraceae > Cotula

Characteristics

A diffuse perennial herb with leafy stolons rooting at the distal nodes and there producing new leaf rosettes, vegetative parts villous with long spreading hairs, flowering stems terminal, up to c. 40 cm, ascending-erect, simple, leafy below becoming nude and pedunculoid above, glabrous in the upper part, swollen below the head. Radical and lower stem leaves up to 7.5 x 1.5 cm, oblong to spathulate in outline, pinnately divided about two-thirds of the way to the midrib, lobes oblong-elliptic, up to 6 x 4 mm, decreasing in size downwards, entire or sparingly toothed or lobulate, lower third petiole-like, flat, base expanded, half-clasping. Upper stem leaves similar to the lower, but rapidly decreasing in size upwards, becoming sessile and passing into bracts. Heads homogamous, solitary, depressed-globose, 13-20 mm across. Involucral bracts more or less biseriate, glabrous, margins scarious. Receptacle flat, outer pedicels 0.5-0.75 mm long becoming gradually shorter inwards. Flowers bright yellow, reddening with age. Achenes 2-2.5 mm long, compressed, faces slightly convex, narrowly winged, not becoming mucilaginous when wet.
