Cotula socialis Hilliard

Species

Angiosperms > Asterales > Asteraceae > Cotula

Characteristics

A diffuse mat-forming perennial herb with leafy stolons rooting at the distal nodes and there producing leaf rosettes, vegetative parts villous with long silky spreading hairs, flowering stems terminal, ascending erect to c. 15 cm, simple, leafy, becoming pedunculoid upwards, glabrous in the upper part, swollen below the head. Radical and lower stem leaves up to 4.5 x 1 cm, oblong or oblong-spathulate in outline, usually bipinnate in the upper part, always pinnate in the lower, these lobes reduced in size downwards, lobes linear or linear-lanceolate, (2-)2.5(-6) x 0.25-0.5 mm, nearly sessile or with a flat petiole up to 15 mm long, base broad, clasping. Upper stem leaves similar to the radical, but sessile, sometimes once-pinnate, gradually smaller upwards and passing into bracts. Heads homogamous, solitary, depressed-globose, 10-17 mm across. Involucral bracts in c. 3 series, glabrous, margins scarious. Receptacle flat, outer pedicels 1-1.5 mm long, decreasing slightly in length inwards. Flowers bright yellow, reddening with age. Achenes c. 1 mm long, compressed, faces slightly convex, narrowly winged, becoming mucilaginous when wet.
