Characteristics

Shrubs or scramblers up to 2 m high, little branched. Leaves opposite, obovate to rarely oblanceolate, 20-45(-55) x (10-)15-25 mm, cuneate, usually acute, dorsiventrally compressed and somewhat concave above, convex below, glabrous, often with flaking wax (silvery flakes on dried specimens), usually yellowish green with a deep red margin almost around the whole leaf. Inflorescence a thyrse with 1, 2 (3) dichasia, each with few flowers; peduncle slender, 0.15-0.25(-0.3) m long, glabrous. Calyx: lobes triangular, 3-4 mm long, acute, glabrous to pubescent. Corolla usually orange-red; tube almost cylindrical, 12-15 mm long, glabrous on inside and outside; lobes lanceolate. Squamae transversely oblong, 0.8-1 x 1.7-2 mm, emarginate, very fleshy, pale yellow.
