Characteristics

Ascending branched shrubs to 600 mm tall. Roots fibrous. Basal stem 18 mm diameter longitudinally fissured with peeling greyish-brown bark. Leaves sessile, decussate, ascending to ascending-spreading, dorsiventrally compressed, green, broadly obovate 25-50 x 20-17 mm, margin reddish and slightly cartilaginous in the upper third; surface very sticky due to dense, very short, translucent, club-shaped, glandular trichomes; base cuneate, apex mucronate. Internodes 5-18 mm apart. Inflorescence reduced to a solitary flower at the branch ends and with one pair of bracts 5 x 1 mm, the latter soon becoming deciduous. Peduncle about 45 mm long with one pair of small bracts 5 x 1 mm. Calyx lobes triangular 8 x 4 mm. Corolla cylindrical with spreading, orange red 30 mm long; tube cylindrical 17-18 mm long and 10 mm in diameter at base, the lobes 17 x 5 mm linear-lanceolate, spreading and becoming recurved, fused basally for about 16-17 mm; Stamens 10, in two whorls; anthers bearing terminal appendages. Squamae ascending, spreading-triangular, yellowish-green 1.5 mm high, obtuse, 3.5 mm wide at the base, semi-translucent. Style branches free for 8 mm.
