Characteristics

Shrubs up to 1.2 m high, much branched. Leaves opposite, oblanceolate to obovate, (20-)23-27(-32) x 6-12(-15) mm, with cuneate or subpetiolate base, acute, cuspidate or rarely obtuse, dorsiventrally compressed but somewhat convex on both surfaces, glabrous, with flaking wax (silvery flakes on dried material), usually deep green and sometimes with a reddish margin towards apex. Inflorescence a dichasium with 1(2, 3) flowers; peduncle (5-)10-30(-50) mm long, glabrous. Calyx: lobes triangular, 3.5-4.5(-6) mm long, acute, glabrous. Corolla deep red to orange; tube almost cylindrical, 12-15 mm long, glabrous except for a tuft of hairs where filaments are fused to tube on inside; lobes lanceolate to ovate, recurved, rarely recoiled. Squamae transversely oblong, 0.6-0.8 x 1.8-2 mm, slightly emarginate, fleshy, yellow. Flowering period: mainly December to April, but flowers are found almost at any time of the year when rain has fallen.
